look after your heart

look after your heart (2025) is a three-part installation, commissioned by Indigo Arts Alliance and the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, that comprise the mirror poem, “revolution is ritual.” Symbolically referencing the plants located in the woodland beds, “revolution is ritual” speaks to belonging, safety, rootedness, compassion, and serves as a spell for opening, encouraging, and healing the heart.

Inlaid into the ground on forty-five cedar planks, guests are invited to walk the poem, sit on the bench, and play “grand revolve,” a song created to tend to the light in their chest. Composed by cellist Robin Lane, vocals by Jazmin DeRice, singing lyrics written by me that were sourced from the Latin and common names of the botanicals found in the Reiser Woodland Garden. The third element is a poetry apothecary with items sold for a limited of time in the GardenShop. Handmade by textile artist Katherine Ferrier, the cotton/linen pouches are dyed with native Maine plants and botanicals from the Reiser Woodland Garden and contains a bespoke heart salve made by Unfiltered Skincare and the poem “revolution is ritual” in a medicine vial. Graphic design and layout was wonderfully coordinated by Beatrix Chan.
